Have you ever considered making your very own Homemade Oven Baked Apple Chips? Yet another way to enjoy apples! It’s amazing how different an apple tastes once the moisture is removed.
Introduction
Naturally sweet, healthy and totally addictive. Making this apple chips recipe is a lot easier than you think and it makes for the perfect snack when the munchies hit. Truly the perfect way to transform all those apples!
What do I need to make apple chips?
- Apples. Any variety works well with this recipe.
- Cinnamon. A sprinkle of this warm, comforting spice adds just the right amount of flavor.
As far as accessories are concerned, you will need a very sharp knife and a cutting board. You will also need a baking sheet and some parchment paper.
How to make Apple Chips:
Making apple chips is a two-step procedure.
Slice and bake.
That’s all there is to it!
You can also sprinkle the top of the apple slices with a little cinnamon. If you love the flavors associated with pumpkin spice, that is a great alternative!
Some recipes will also have you dip the apples in lemon juice to prevent browning, I personally think that the browning gives the apple slices more character.
Other recipes will also have you add some sugar to the apple slices, something I also think unnecessary, as the apples carry so much natural sweetness already.
There are literally hundreds of different varieties of apples to choose from, ranging in color from yellow, green, red, and pink. Experiment and see which ones you like best. The apple you choose will, unsurprisingly, affect the taste of the final product.
Nutrition tip: Not all chips are created equally. When you’re craving something crispy, these Homemade Oven Baked Apple Chips are definitely an excellent alternative to the store-bought variety. Just like fresh, raw apples, these chips are a great source of fiber (soluble and insoluble). Just be mindful of how many you are eating!
Recipe origins
I love eating any kind of fruit and vegetable chips (apple, strawberry, plantain, sweet potato…) but as in most commercially prepared products, there is a tendency to add a little too much salt and sugar.
When I first discovered how easy it was to make oven chips (from this article), I got hooked. Just like this recipe for oven-dried Strawberries or this recipe for sun-dried cherry tomatoes, these Apple Chips can easily and conveniently be made in your own oven. Just recently I tried making Banana Chips at home and they were a huge hit with my family.
As an added bonus, your whole kitchen will be filled with the sweet-smelling fragrance of apples and cinnamon.
Apple season has arrived and I, for one, am absolutely thrilled. However, there are so many ways to enjoy apples throughout the year!
Here are some of my favorite ways: they can be simmered to make this recipe for Apple Fig Herbal Tea, or made into an Easy Homemade Spiced Apple Butter or perhaps even consumed as the Best Ever Baked Apple.
If you prefer muffins, how about this recipe for Apple Pie Muffins, or perhaps you will enjoy this recipe for an Almond Apple Square Cake. Can you tell I just love apples!
Apples are truly the perfect snack and can be eaten in baked goods, fresh or even dried, as homemade oven-baked apple chips.
Enjoy!!!

We have an apple tree and our Granny Smith apples are finally ripe! I made this recipe with them and they were delicious. I highly suggest trying this with Granny Smith apples. So good!
Maria
How wonderful Erica! Thanks so much for sharing. Enjoy!
Brynley
What kinds of apples work well for this? I have Honeycrisp apples and i was wondering if this would work.
Thanks,
Brynley L.
Maria
Thanks for your interest Brynley. Honeycrisp is a great choice. You may have to adjust the total time based on the moisture of your apples. Enjoy!
zoya
omg I baked mine for all of 30 minutes and some have burnt!!! why!!!
Maria
I am sorry to read this Zoya. As you probably know, every oven heats a little differently. Perhaps your oven is actually hotter than it indicates. Have you ever checked that the actual oven temperature is the same as the set temperature?
Di

The recipe was easy to follow but for a more even slices I will use my mandolin slicer. I made three batches on different cookie sheets. The best result was from the sheet that has a built in air cushion in the middle. The apples were crispy and didn’t turn dark. I had bad results from a dark colored sheet that didn’t burn but apples had a smoky quality. Not a whole lot of flavor to these apples. I think they weren’t very sweet to begin with.
Maria
Thanks so much for sharing! Using a mandolin slicer is a great option.
The apple you choose will definitely affect the taste of the final product. As you probably know, there are literally hundreds of variations. Hopefully, you will find one that you like.
Karen
I have tried other recipes twice- but the apples don’t get crispy. I am going to try cutting them a bit thinner and bake longer. Hope this recipe works. I am using green apples.
Maria
Anxious to hear your results Karen.
Elise
Easy and delicious. I was given some apples that weren’t great for eating, but they made great apple crisps!
Maria
Thank you Elise!
Donna Jean
Think I might have made them too thick.
Maria
Are they having a hard time drying out? There are some varieties that have more moisture… when that happens to me I simply chop them up and add them to my cereal or yogurt bowl. Thanks for stopping by Donna.
Sarah
This was so easy to do, even with a one year old nipping at my heels, and they turned out perfectly! I was so fed up with buying overpriced baby snack dried apple that tasted and felt like cardboard from the supermarket, but my son and his friends were hooked on them. They tried these today adn even the other mums loved them. Thank you for the recipe!
Maria
LoL… Thanks so much for taking the time to share, appreciate it Sarah!
