Have you ever considered making your very own Homemade Oven Baked Apple Chips? Yet another way to enjoy apples! It’s amazing how different an apple tastes once the moisture is removed.
Introduction
Naturally sweet, healthy and totally addictive. Making this apple chips recipe is a lot easier than you think and it makes for the perfect snack when the munchies hit. Truly the perfect way to transform all those apples!
What do I need to make apple chips?
- Apples. Any variety works well with this recipe.
- Cinnamon. A sprinkle of this warm, comforting spice adds just the right amount of flavor.
As far as accessories are concerned, you will need a very sharp knife and a cutting board. You will also need a baking sheet and some parchment paper.
How to make Apple Chips:
Making apple chips is a two-step procedure.
Slice and bake.
That’s all there is to it!
You can also sprinkle the top of the apple slices with a little cinnamon. If you love the flavors associated with pumpkin spice, that is a great alternative!
Some recipes will also have you dip the apples in lemon juice to prevent browning, I personally think that the browning gives the apple slices more character.
Other recipes will also have you add some sugar to the apple slices, something I also think unnecessary, as the apples carry so much natural sweetness already.
There are literally hundreds of different varieties of apples to choose from, ranging in color from yellow, green, red, and pink. Experiment and see which ones you like best. The apple you choose will, unsurprisingly, affect the taste of the final product.
Nutrition tip: Not all chips are created equally. When you’re craving something crispy, these Homemade Oven Baked Apple Chips are definitely an excellent alternative to the store-bought variety. Just like fresh, raw apples, these chips are a great source of fiber (soluble and insoluble). Just be mindful of how many you are eating!
Recipe origins
I love eating any kind of fruit and vegetable chips (apple, strawberry, plantain, sweet potato…) but as in most commercially prepared products, there is a tendency to add a little too much salt and sugar.
When I first discovered how easy it was to make oven chips (from this article), I got hooked. Just like this recipe for oven-dried Strawberries or this recipe for sun-dried cherry tomatoes, these Apple Chips can easily and conveniently be made in your own oven. Just recently I tried making Banana Chips at home and they were a huge hit with my family.
As an added bonus, your whole kitchen will be filled with the sweet-smelling fragrance of apples and cinnamon.
Apple season has arrived and I, for one, am absolutely thrilled. However, there are so many ways to enjoy apples throughout the year!
Here are some of my favorite ways: they can be simmered to make this recipe for Apple Fig Herbal Tea, or made into an Easy Homemade Spiced Apple Butter or perhaps even consumed as the Best Ever Baked Apple.
If you prefer muffins, how about this recipe for Apple Pie Muffins, or perhaps you will enjoy this recipe for an Almond Apple Square Cake. Can you tell I just love apples!
Apples are truly the perfect snack and can be eaten in baked goods, fresh or even dried, as homemade oven-baked apple chips.
Enjoy!!!

- Wash and dry the apples.
- Core apples (optional).

- Place apples on the baking sheet in a single layer and not touching each other.
- Sprinkle cinnamon evenly over apple slices.

Notes
Once the apple chips have been baked, they will crisp up as they cool off. Please keep in mind that the nutritional information provided below is just a rough estimate and variations can occur depending on the specific ingredients used.

Had some apples that were starting to look a little sorry, and I found this recipe! I didn’t have parchment paper but discovered tinfoil with nonstick spray works pretty well. Tasty stuff! Thank you! I also tried this with some lemons I’d been ignoring, and threw in a couple of clementines. That was also tasty! I will definitely be eating more apples since I can bake them this way. ¡Gracias!
Maria
How wonderful! Thanks so much for sharing!

I made this over the weekend. So good! I baked them a little longer (2.5 hrs) because I wanted them crispy. The key is to cut them thin so they don’t stay chewy.
Maria
Fantastic Trisha, thanks for sharing!

That’s so cool that you do Italian recipes! I’m studying Italian right now for high school language so I enjoy trying Italian things. 😊I’m planning on making these for my sister in law who has a lot of food allergies. Thanks for the recipe!
Maria
My pleasure Genn. What a great language to learn, have fun! How very thoughtful of you.

I was wondering about using a cookie cooling rack to bake the chips on instead of a regular baking sheet. Mine is a heavy duty one that is a small grid design. Maybe they wouldn’t have to be turned over during cooking time. What do you think?
Maria
The temperature is low enough but I don’t know if the heat would ruin the finish as some cooling racks are not supposed to be heated. Can you look up the company and ask online? Perhaps if you have an air fryer basket that might work. Thanks for stopping by Carol.

Some recipes recommend a lemon juice/water rinse before baking/drying to prevent a color change. Any thoughts, please?
Maria
It really depends on your preferences. As I mention in the post, I personally think that the browning gives the apple slices more character. It’s really up to you! Thanks for stopping by.
Denise
I was just wondering if anyone has tried freezing them after making them? I have lots of apples my mom gave me from their trees and would love to be able to just spend the weekend drying a bunch out in the oven and freeze them for when I want them!
Maria
Great question Denise! I am curious to see if anyone has tried this…
Just wondering if they would still remain crispy after thawing. Here is what I would do… make and freeze a small batch and then you can see for yourself what the final texture is like. Would love to hear about your results if you do decide to try it out. Thanks for stopping by.
Patty
HI .. Has anyone answered yet that they tried this?
Maria
Hi Patty… unfortunately, not yet.

I tried your recipe yesterday and loved them. I’m a salt lover so today I’m trying the recipe with a seasoning called Mrs Dash. Will let you know how it goes.
Maria
How wonderful Lee! Thanks so much for sharing, appreciate it!

I tried it and I really enjoyed them. They taste just like the ones at the grocery store, except this time I don’t have to pay a lot for a little. Thanks!!
Maria
Yes, I agree the price for apple chips is ridiculous for such an easy snack to make at home. Thanks so much for taking the time to share your experience with this recipe, appreciate it 🙂

Like some of the other posters, my weakness is potato chips and this seems like an amazing alternative. I am into more “salty” snacks, so rather than adding sugar or cinnamon, what can I add to give it that saltiness to satiate my craving? I plan on using Granny Smith Apples.
Maria
The Granny Smith apple is a great choice. As you probably know, lemon juice can sometimes “fool” our taste buds in thinking that we are having something salty. You might try brushing just a little bit of lemon juice on the apple slices. Since you are increasing the moisture content, the apple slices might need to be in the oven a little longer.
Would love to hear about your results if you do decide to try this. Great comment! Thanks for stopping by ♥

My boyfriend has been trying very hard to lose some weight but he’s not a young buck anymore so it takes a little more effort then it used to if you know what I mean. Unfortunately he can go all day without eating until dinner but once he eats dinner he can’t seem to stop snacking ALL NIGHT LONG. Cheese & crackers, sourdough toast w/marmalade, sugar free popsicles, celery & peanut butter & cheese and Apple’s. He’ll do this ALL night long. Night snacking is his enemy but half the time he doesn’t even realize he’s doing it, Kinda like sleep eating. He will grab whatever is quick & easy, ESPECIALLY if it’s crunchy. I’ve been looking for healthier snacks to put out for him that he’ll like & that will fill that “crunch” craving & maybe get him to pass up the cheese & crackers or sourdough toast. I found a recipe for baked banana chips & he LOVES them & then I found your recipe for these apple chips. I have them in the oven right now so they’ll be ready for him tonight. I’m sure he’s going to ABSOLUTELY LOVE them & I can’t wait for tomorrow morning when he tells me how great they were. Thank You for the recipe and I’ll let you know what his reaction was. Please let me know if you have any other healthy hidden gems like this to help w/late night snacking. Lisa T.

Karyn
I have made these twice now and both times they are not crispy, they are soft. They taste great, but I don’t know what I am doing wrong. Last time i baked them for 2.5 hours and still chewy…any advice?
Maria
I’m sorry to hear you are having a hard time getting the apples to crisp up Karyn. I’m just wondering which variety of apples are you using? Did you use the same variety both times? Were the apples sliced as thin as possible? Perhaps they need to stay longer in the oven because they have a higher moisture content. Sometimes, we need to tweak because of the moisture content in the apples. Hope this helps. Thanks for stopping by.
