Have you ever considered making your very own Homemade Oven Baked Apple Chips? Yet another way to enjoy apples! It’s amazing how different an apple tastes once the moisture is removed.
Introduction
Naturally sweet, healthy and totally addictive. Making this apple chips recipe is a lot easier than you think and it makes for the perfect snack when the munchies hit. Truly the perfect way to transform all those apples!
What do I need to make apple chips?
- Apples. Any variety works well with this recipe.
- Cinnamon. A sprinkle of this warm, comforting spice adds just the right amount of flavor.
As far as accessories are concerned, you will need a very sharp knife and a cutting board. You will also need a baking sheet and some parchment paper.
How to make Apple Chips:
Making apple chips is a two-step procedure.
Slice and bake.
That’s all there is to it!
You can also sprinkle the top of the apple slices with a little cinnamon. If you love the flavors associated with pumpkin spice, that is a great alternative!
Some recipes will also have you dip the apples in lemon juice to prevent browning, I personally think that the browning gives the apple slices more character.
Other recipes will also have you add some sugar to the apple slices, something I also think unnecessary, as the apples carry so much natural sweetness already.
There are literally hundreds of different varieties of apples to choose from, ranging in color from yellow, green, red, and pink. Experiment and see which ones you like best. The apple you choose will, unsurprisingly, affect the taste of the final product.
Nutrition tip: Not all chips are created equally. When you’re craving something crispy, these Homemade Oven Baked Apple Chips are definitely an excellent alternative to the store-bought variety. Just like fresh, raw apples, these chips are a great source of fiber (soluble and insoluble). Just be mindful of how many you are eating!
Recipe origins
I love eating any kind of fruit and vegetable chips (apple, strawberry, plantain, sweet potato…) but as in most commercially prepared products, there is a tendency to add a little too much salt and sugar.
When I first discovered how easy it was to make oven chips (from this article), I got hooked. Just like this recipe for oven-dried Strawberries or this recipe for sun-dried cherry tomatoes, these Apple Chips can easily and conveniently be made in your own oven. Just recently I tried making Banana Chips at home and they were a huge hit with my family.
As an added bonus, your whole kitchen will be filled with the sweet-smelling fragrance of apples and cinnamon.
Apple season has arrived and I, for one, am absolutely thrilled. However, there are so many ways to enjoy apples throughout the year!
Here are some of my favorite ways: they can be simmered to make this recipe for Apple Fig Herbal Tea, or made into an Easy Homemade Spiced Apple Butter or perhaps even consumed as the Best Ever Baked Apple.
If you prefer muffins, how about this recipe for Apple Pie Muffins, or perhaps you will enjoy this recipe for an Almond Apple Square Cake. Can you tell I just love apples!
Apples are truly the perfect snack and can be eaten in baked goods, fresh or even dried, as homemade oven-baked apple chips.
Enjoy!!!

- 1 teaspoon cinnamon
Instructions
- Position oven racks in the upper and lower third of oven.
- Preheat oven to 225 ℉.
- Line 2 baking sheets with parchment paper. Set aside.
- Wash and dry the apples.
- Core apples (optional).
- Slice apples as thin as possible (about ⅛ inch) with a very sharp knife or a mandolin (leave skin on).
- Place apples on the baking sheet in a single layer and not touching each other.
- Sprinkle cinnamon evenly over apple slices.
- Bake for approximately 1 hour and then turn each slice over, and continue to bake for at least another hour so. The longer they stay, they crispier they get.

What type of Apple I can use for this recipe?
Maria
Any type of apple works. The time in the oven will vary due to the moisture content of the apple. Enjoy 🙂

I tried this recipe out and was happy with the results. I used a spiralizer and it worked like a charm! They also got nice and crispy like they were suppose to. Te only problem that I ran into is that they were a little dark in both color and flavor. They were looking dark around the inner side when I flipped them and the rest filled in in the half an hour I gave them on the second side. They definitely weren’t as pretty and light as the ones in your pictures. They weren’t actually burnt anywhere, just dark and a little musky flavored. Wondering if you have any input before I try again. I was wondering if you think that could be because I used a silpat instead of parchment paper – normally they are interchangeable, but not always. Or do you think that my oven runs too hot and I should try 200?
Maria
I would agree with you… both points you made can be contributing factors. I would also add the type of apple and the variability of the percentage of moisture found in the apple. I do not have a spiralizer… I am assuming you can control the thickness… just wondering if this can be another variable. Appreciate your comment Mindy -would love to hear about the results if you do decide to try the recipe again… Thanks so much for taking the time to share your experience with everyone 🙂

I finally got the time to try this again! I switched to the parchment paper and it worked great. I did reduce the temp to 200 as well. Still with both of those, my apples were done in 1 hour 20 minutes. Had I left them in any longer, I’m pretty sure they would have gotten overly dark again. As is, they were perfect! They crisped up great and had a nice light color and flavor. My husband loved them so much that all my batches were gone by the end of the night. I’ll definitely be making these regularly!
On a technical note – I thought I’d be clever and cute down one side of the apple to just get individual rings without going back and arranging them. This didn’t work – it actually made them break apart more. Maybe it is just my spiralizer, but maybe it’s the nature of the process and apples.
One other note – I didn’t like the way my cinnamon seemed to sprinkle kind of clumpy onto the slices the first time, so I used sticks and grated it right on top. It had a nice even distribution and killer flavor. I also tired fresh grated nutmeg. I’m also thinking about trying cardamom. Maybe I’ll just do a chai spice mix… So many ideas. I’m so excited!!!
Maria
Fantastic Mindy! Wow, so many great flavor ideas, I’m salivating… I truly appreciate you sharing your experience and your thoughts… it brings so much value to this recipe. Hope you and your family have a wonderful week-end ♥

I love apple chips. I bought a bag of them the other day. Overpriced. I saw your site and am making them now with a Fuji apple. One apple pretty much takes up an entire baking pan lined with Reynolds Wrap Heavy Duty Non-Stick.
Felicia
Thanks for sharing your recipe for apple chips. I simply love apple chips. I was always buying them from the store; and longed for a recipe that would allow me to have them any time. I used granny smith apples because they are my favorite.
Maria
My pleasure Felicia! Thanks so much for taking the time to comment 🙂
Karen
Hi Maria, love being able to use up all the apples from picking. Chips are a great idea but they only stay crispy for a short time after I remove them from the oven. They are well browned. Help!
Maria
Hi Karen, we also love using up all the apples we picked from our apple picking excursions-yes, there were 2 this year 🙂 I have been making apple chips the past couple of week-ends and this is what I have found: if I slice the apples a little on the thick side, they will not crisp up as much. So slicing them as thin as possible is crucial for crispy apple chips. Also, I find the apples to have more moisture this year -that is to say they are super juicy. As a result, I find I need to leave them in the oven a little longer than usual. So if you also have super juicy apples, try to use a lower temperature (200℉). Once they have spent about 1-1½ hour on each side (making sure you turn them over at the half way mark) turn the oven off and leave the apple slices in the oven for about another hour or so. I find they become even crispier. Hope that helps Karen. Appreciate you taking the time to comment. Enjoy the rest of the week!
Maria
Hi Sara, they will keep for about a week or so, in an airtight container. Have fun camping! Appreciate your comment 🙂
Lynn
Do they lose their crispness ? I’d like to make them on Sunday but won’t be serving them until Thursday
Maria
Unfortunately, I would say yes. These really are at their best the day they are made. Great question. Thanks for dropping by 🙂
Wenda
I am sure though that if you make them and you have left overs, you can pop them back in the oven for a good 5 mins and it will be nice and crisp again to serve. It might even need less than 5 mins in a pre-heated oven? Worth the try. I will be making these this weekend. Thanks for the recipe.
Maria
Wenda, that is absolutely genius… I never thought of doing this! I will also be trying this the next time I make some apple chips… although I will have to hide some 😉 Great comment, thanks for stopping by 🙂
Lauren
I’m on a low carb diet and have eliminated starchy vegetables such as potatoes and corn. Potato chips are a weakness so I was trying to come up with a healthy alternative with crunch, and these perfectly fit the bill! Made them for the first time today and they were crispy, tasty, and very “snacky” with no guilt which is to die for. Thanks for the recipe, I love trying new recipes-very fun to make. Will definitely make them again. ????
Maria
That’s wonderful Lauren … the perfect fall snack food. Thanks for taking the time to comment 🙂

Wonderful recipe! Thank you so much for sharing 🙂 I always loved apple chips, but never thought of making it myself. I will definitely make them 🙂

With fall right around the corner, it’s the perfect time to turn some of those freshly picked apples into some chips 😉 Enjoy! Appreciate you taking the time to comment 🙂
